7:15 PM – All Bodies Dance Carnegie Project (Other Animal)
Other Animal is a culmination of the creative work with All Bodies Carnegie participants over the last 2 years, and especially over the recent summer session. Our practices have included presencing with, responding to and witnessing one another as acts of care. We celebrate our interconnected imaginations, our agency in self-expression, and dancing as a way of being together in community.
7:40 PM – hoodie browns
8:05 PM – Pigeon Den Art Collective (Don't Feed Da Pigeons)
What is it about Pigeons anyways? Each time you try to shoo them away, they come back stronger and oblivious to any obstacle that might stand in their way. Lance Lim has always been fascinated with them every since he used to feed them over at Pigeon Park (now where the survivors pole stands). As a disabled artist, a person of color, pigeons represent a kind of sustained resilience. They keep coming at you, never flinching, challenging their oppressors. As with those who live in the margins, disabled, handicapped they are often invisible but yet we see their presence everyday. Maybe their fight is about the right to be seen, heard, and valued.
8:25 PM – Love Vibes (Source of all the pain)
8:50 PM – Horse Funeral
"These are live soulful, acoustic songs written to escape the boredom of small town life and Ctulu, the bringer of sad."
9:15 PM – Kinfolk Nation
I liked to listen to a lot of music hits played on the radio 1960-1970. Grade six and seven we had music class. Students played guitars and sang a variety of popular songs. I had a guitar at home and played it sometimes for fun. I quit school and worked in restaurants, bakeries and other casual jobs. At forty one for two years I attended continuing ed for adults in Vancouver and received a grade twelve Diploma. I started to play the guitar again and wrote some songs. I started performing at the open mic in Surrey. Regularly I perform at the Poetry Cabaret @ Carnegie Center. I received DTES Small Arts Grants in 2018, 2019 and 2020 to record original songs. I have performed at the OutSiders Festival, Vancouver Emergence Festival, Heart Of The City Festival and performed live on Vancouver Coop Radio. Other artistic interests are drawing and video. I enjoy performing. Hope to perform more often in the future. I perform solo. Never been in a band but this allows me to be more personal when I get on stage and improvise if I like. Some songs are political, about me and pure fiction.
All Bodies Dance Project (ABDP) is an inclusive dance company located on unceded Skwxwú7mesh, Səl̓ílwətaɬ, and xʷməθkwəy̓əm territories. Our work brings together artists with and without disabilities to explore the endless creative possibilities in difference. We aim to dismantle assumptions, biases and default notions around contemporary dance, the theatre and the dancing body. The performers and co-creators of this year’s Vines piece are participants at the All Bodies classes at Carnegie Community Centre, co-facilitated by Rianne Svelnis, and Lance Lim, with facilitation support and live Chinese translation offered by Kevin Li.
Hoodie Browns (she/her) is a settler of Amhara, Oromo and Tigray descent living on traditional & unceded territories of the šxʷməθkʷəy̓əmaɁɬ təməxʷ (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh-ulh Temíx̱w (Squamish) and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ təməxʷ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
She’s been compared to Corinne Bailey Rae meets 1960s Motown & Soul with a *sprinkle* of hip hop. With fluid sounds and soft beats, her music is gently disarming. She offers us a moment to hold ourselves and see what movement comes up in stillness, to reclaim our connection to our humanity that was stolen from us all, but especially for multiply marginalized folks."
Lance Lim is a local artist who grew up in the Strathcona district and his original movement background came from studying martial arts and Wu shu. As a former Wu Shu athlete, he competed in North American tournaments until he suffered major injuries.
This brought him to study dance at Simon Fraser University. He had several student pieces displayed at student shows. In 1998 he was involved with the Chinese Cultural Centre and worked with other artists on Self Not Whole, a showcase of Canadian Asian artists.
He also has had his choreography displayed in Dancing on the Edge and most recently as part of the Heart of the City Festival. He is a teaching assistant and associate artist with All Bodies Dance Group.
